guru boy pt. II is part two of The guru boy Saga, and the second single in #pinkfridays vol. II.

Part one—released as the first single in #pinkfridays vol. I—introduced us to a guru in the hills of LA, from the point of view of someone just deciding to become a follower.

The problem is that the guru’s vision of a departure to another dimension didn’t come true.

And his followers—who had an inclination for fire ??—weren’t very happy about it.

guru boy pt. II is the continuation of that story.

Songwriting

Lyrics

Guru boy man you got me going hard
Now I’m thirsty for their blood
Thinking maybe I’m the judge
Maybe I’m the one who’s coming
The one who’ll show them
In this war there’s a hero and a whore

Maybe I’m the son you desired
When you moved on

Now it’s me and your soul
Me and your soul
It’s me and your soul
Me and your soul

Yellow boy walking down the boulevard
Stacking bodies in the mud
Turning killers into dust
I told you I was done pretending
Don’t you worry
I’ve got em all queuing up at death’s door

You will rise from their ashes
A phoenix at dawn

Now it’s me and your soul
Me and your soul
It’s me and your soul
Me and your soul

I like it
I’m not gonna fail
I’m the sidekick
Going off the rails
Do you like me?
Do you think I’ll fail?
Am I crazy?
Going off the rails

I got it
You want it
My blueprint
My fable
Those roses
You’re hiding
They’re falling
Boy you got it ’cause it’s in my head
Faded into the blue

Now it’s me and your soul (me and your soul)
Me and your soul (falling in love)
It’s me and your soul (me and your soul)
Me and your soul

I like it
I’m not gonna fail
I’m the sidekick
Going off the rails
Do you like me?
Do you think I’ll fail?
Am I crazy?
Going off the rails (now it’s me and your soul)
I like it
I’m not gonna fail (me and your soul)
I’m the sidekick
Going off the rails (it’s me and your soul)
Do you like me?
Do you think I’ll fail? (me and your soul)
Am I crazy?
Going off the rails (it’s me and you)

The song takes place decades after part one, when yellow boy, an admirer of the original guru boy, is set on making things right.

He believes he’s the prodigal son the guru never had and he takes it upon himself to embark on a tale of revenge against those who murdered the original guru boy.

In guru boy pt. II we get to explore the saga from yellow boy’s perspective. It’s a glimpse into his delusion and psychopathy, as he talks to guru boy in his mind and tells him about his plans to revenge his death.

The song doesn’t reach the end of the yellow boy timeline though, as we’re left hanging right after he goes on his killing spree.

The guru boy Saga now has two open timelines, and I’ll keep exploring it with a new single in every new #pinkfridays volume—the third single in #pinkfridays vol. III will be guru boy pt. III and so forth.

I’d love to turn the whole saga into a film or a limited series at some point. When you look at it all together it reads more like a script than songs, but I found the idea of releasing it in music form divided into parts over the years quite exciting. It’s the sort of thing I’d geek out over as a fan if any of my favourite artists did it, so I hope some of you are into it too.

Production

The first iteration of this song was a beat I called Beach. I wrote it in April 2020—just double checked in my journal.

Beach had the opening melody, synths, and drums. I also sang the melody for the verses, with some random lyrics.

After I decided to release if i’m honest as the first single, I had the idea to use Beach to create guru boy pt. II. I went in and wrote lyrics to fit into the original scratch vocals I’d done months before. Sometimes songwriting is a lot like making puzzles.

The second iteration of the idea had the intro, verses, and choruses. The post-choruses came after, as I needed something to break out of the constant beat of the track. I was in the studio and stumbled into the idea by chance, as it usually happens. Even when you’re actively trying to write a part, it’ll often be the case that you stop for a bit and randomly come across the part while you’re on the break.

The most fun part of the production was creating the second post-chorus section and layering in all sort of stuff, from an acoustic drumkit to electric guitars. I really like exploring the realm of electronic music production blended with more traditional genres like rock and folk. I think finding the balance is an interesting experiment. Trust me, it can go wrong very quickly ?
